This is my sister-in-law's dad John. He comes to the family birthday bash. He's farmed and raised sons and smoked and had some beers and now he mostly holds court. I like his face, so he let me take his picture. It takes a lot of years and living to build a face like this.
This is John's wife Leila. She is a little fireball. Here she's on her own picture safari at the Colony Inn, stalking Walker, who is questioning the wisdom of me bringing the camera to the party. He is old enough now to appreciate this tradition for the exercise in prolonged irony that it is. We like Leila. It's not her fault.
I have seen a wedding picture of John and Leila when they were married. They were HOT! Nice looking couple. He was dark and craggy and she was young and clear eyed and beautiful.
This is my nephew Noah. He is taking his shirt off because he got worked up throwing spitballs and then spilled chocolate milk. Several of us encouraged the spitball fight by re-initiating it when it died down. We have several cousins whose mother is so nervous they can't go outside or relax or be kids or anything. Noah's parents are cool and so we let Noah spill his milk on himself. He's grief stricken.

Sam-I am not sure exactly what you do with Americorps kids...but we found out that a friend of Andrew's (our oldest) is now in Cedar Rapids with Americorps. His name is Adam Markley and he tells Andrew that he is working in a wharehouse sorting out donated items. He'd previously been in New Orleans. He was back in Madison over the weekend and he and AJ went to a concert last night. Andrew did not mention that his uncle's friend was also there....(or so we thought). Anyway...if you see him...let him know what a small world it is.
--On another note, we had a great week with Kevin. It's good to see in person that he is doing ok. And it was great for him to be able to bring Trooley.

AmeriCorps has three branches. Vista and Learn and Serve America are contracted out state by state. Your friend Andrew is doing Vista work in CR. Those folks do a lot of organizing and work more individually.
I work for the NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) started by GHW Bush and implemented under Clinton. These folks work in a Corps structure, live in dorms, work in teams and do conservation, disaster recovery and Habitat for Humanity work. There is a strong service learning and leadership component to their training. We are the only branch of Americorps that is Federal.
We're all under the Corporation for National Service.
